Title: How To Give a Talk: Advice on Preparing and Presenting Technical Talks in the Mathematical Sciences Speaker: Tamara Kolda, Sandia National LaboratoriesDate/Time: Wednesday, July 19, 2006, 2:00 – 3:00 pm (PST) Location: 940 Auditorium (Sandia CA), Videoconferenced to Building 980, Room 95 (Sandia NM) Brief Abstract: I'll offer some advice on preparing and presenting technical talks in the mathematical sciences. Technical talks are one of the primary ways for communicating your work to the larger community. In particular for junior mathematicians and computer scientists, more people will learn of your work through your presentations than may ever read your papers. A clear, concise, and cohesive talk will demonstrate your deep understanding of the subject and allow you to put a personal spin on the material as well. In this talk I'll cover many of the practical issues for putting together a great talk including knowing your audience, creating and conveying a simple message, allowing plenty of time to prepare your talk, practicing, deciding where to stand when delivering the talk, speaking clearly and slowly, sticking to the allotted time, and much more.
