Title: Fast, Reduced Hamilton-Pontryagin (HP) Variational Integrators Speaker: Nawaf Bou-Rabee, California Institute of Technology, Von Neumann Fellowship Date/Time: Monday, January 15, 2007, 9:00 – 10:00 am Location: CSRI Building, Room 90 (Sandia NM) Brief Abstract: A new class of structure-preserving time-integrators for long-duration simulations of rigid-body type mechanical systems will be presented. These integrators are a dramatic improvement over their predecessors. In particular, their derivation and analysis is mathematically elegant; their efficiency is significantly better; and their implementation/interpretation is straightforward. Numerical experiments on the free rigid body, underwater vehicle, rigid spacecraft with internal rotors, and a fluctuation-driven magnetic motor will be used to justify some of these claims. I will also describe plans to extend these integrators to mechanical systems with internal degrees of freedom. CSRI POC: Eric Phipps, (505) 284-9268 |
