Brief Abstract: Combinatorial and discrete algorithms play an important role in scientific computing. I will give an overview of the CSCAPES SciDAC institute and then focus on one important area of combinatorial scientific computing: partitioning and load-balancing. The Zoltan toolkit, developed at Sandia, is the leading software tool in this area. Finally I will present new models and algorithms to reduce communication in sparse matrix computations.
