Brief Abstract: The efficient discretization of time dependent multiscale/multiphysics PDEs is discussed using the method of lines approach. The PDE semi-discretization (e.g., by finite difference, elements, volume... methods) leads to a system of ODEs which needs to be integrated in time. For an efficient numerical implementation, each physical component and spatial/temporal scale typically require numerical integrators with different properties (e.g., implicit methods for stiff components). Several approaches and their needfulness are discussed for the partitioning of physical processes, temporal scales, and their efficient implementation on high performance computers. In addition, issues regarding adjoint and ensemble data assimilation used in conjunction with such methods are briefly reviewed.
