Brief Abstract: This presentation is a preview of a tutorial to be presented at the International Conference on Radiation Shielding.
This tutorial will be an introductory survey of the broad field of coupled electron/photon transport (covering the energy range 10 eV – 30 MeV) and its many applications in radiation physics. Topics expected to be covered include:
- Photon and electron interaction data,
- Mathematical methods, including Monte Carlo simulation, transport equation solution, semi-empirical models, and 3-D transport methods,
- Descriptions of several Monte Carlo codes such as PENELOPE, EGSnrc, MCNP, and GEANT4 and how they work,
- Electron-beam phenomena such as: backscatter, transmission, energy and charge deposition, and x-ray generation profiles, AND,
- Introduction to a wide range of application areas including
- radiation therapy physics,
- treatment planning,
- medical imaging,
- radiation processing,
- radiation biology,
- shielding,
- theoretical and experimental dosimetry, including dosimetry at material interfaces,
- radiation charging of insulators,
- positron transport,
- x-ray target spectrum prediction
- electron probe microanalysis,
- x-ray fluorescence analysis,
- x-ray photoelectron spectroscopy and Auger electron spectroscopy,
- secondary electron emission,
- electron slowing down,
- microdosimetry,
- track structure, and
- electron spectroscopies such as EELS, REELS, and EPES.
n electron/photon transport bibliographic database developed by the author containing over 4000 references classified under 62 different topic categories will be described, demonstrated and made available to tutorial participants. (Participants are encouraged to bring a memory device to receive electronic copies of the presentation and handouts).
