Title: Entropy viscosity for nonlinear conservation laws Speaker: Professors Jean-Luc Guermond and Bojan Popov Texas A&M University Date/Time: Thursday, December 10, 2009, 3:00 – 4:00 pm Location: CSRI Building, Room 279 (Sandia NM) Brief Abstract: We introduce a shock-capturing technique for solving nonlinear conservation laws. The method consists of adding a nonlinear viscosity to the Galerkin formulation of the nonlinear system of equations. The nonlinear viscosity is proportional to the residual of the entropy equation and limited by first-oder dissipation. The method is very simple to implement with finite elements, spectral elements, and Fourier approximation, and it is proved to be convergent in some simple cases. We illustrate the method numerically on various two-dimensional benchmarks. CSRI POC: Pavel Bochev, (505) 844-1990/Guglielmo Scovazzi, (505) 844-0707 |
