Brief Abstract: The Insight Toolkit (ITK) is an open source, freely available, object-oriented software system for processing, segmentation, and registration multi-dimensional data, such as images. Developed by a consortium of academic and industrial partners, ITK was funded by the US National Library Of Medicine at the National Institutes of Health to support the Visible Human Project. ITK is now used in nearly every major academic and industrial medical image analysis research laboratory and in several clinical systems.

ITK contains over 142,000 lines of C++ code, 1600 classes, and 1350 tests that are repeated on over 40 different platforms every night. ITK includes a 836 page software development guide and active users’ and developers’ email list. New, stable releases of ITK are generated every three months, and each release is typically downloaded over 11,000 times.
