Concerns about energy independence and potential climate change have revived US interest in nuclear fission power. The US nuclear power R&D effort has been rather inactive for the past two decades. During this same time the US has made great strides in the growing area of computational science and engineering. The combination has set up a situation where the subfield of computational nuclear engineering has outstanding potential for rapid advancement. In this talk we will briefly outline some examples for advancement in computational nuclear engineering along with the motivation for such advancement. Following this we will discuss the motivation for a strong V&V + UQ component and the challenges that must be faced.
