Adaptive Numerical Methods
Adaptive numerical methods offer greater computational efficiency than traditional numerical methods by concentrating computational effort in regions requiring greatest resolution. Some common adaptive methods are
Adaptive order (
p
-) enrichment varies the degree of the approximation. The degrees of individual elements are indicated by varying colors in the pictures below.
Adaptive mesh (
h
-) refinement varies the number and size of elements. In the figure below, two levels of mesh refinement have been added to a uniform 16x16-element mesh.
Adaptive
hp
-refinement combines mesh refinement and order enrichment. High-order elements can be used in smooth regions, while refined elements are used near steep fronts.
