Scott A. Mitchell's personal interests

My active professional fields are Computer Science, Mathematics, and Operations Research. I am interested in Optimization, Sampling, Computational Geometry, and Game Theory. My undergrad education includes physics and electrical engineering.

Besides my technical background, I have a longstanding interests and some formal education in sociology, history, and economics. My favorite authors include Edward T. Hall. The older I get, the more I value my liberal arts undergraduate education; I am a member of Phi Beta Kappa.

I like pretty much every outdoor activity that doesn't involve motors or bullets. It just seems that by bringing those things into the wilderness you end up destroying what you're seeking. My favorite activities tend to be slow and quiet. These include bicycling (road or mountain), skiing (mainly cross-country skiing, to avoid the chairlift thing), hiking, canoeing, surfing, swimming, gardening, fishing, bird watching, camping, cooking and eating. I am a Boy Scout Scoutmaster. I have been a soccer coach and referee.

My soul finds rest as my body wanders the mountains.

Indoors, I enjoy long dinner conversations, movies, computer strategy games, pinball, and reading old stories to myself or my children.
